ROLE OVERVIEW:
The pre-school teacher is responsible for providing a suitable, developmentally appropriate pre-school programme in accordance with the Montessori method of child development. The role is responsible for planning and implementing a programme to teach young children up to 6 years old and ensure their development and safety. The teacher will be respectful of children and parents, and ensure that equipment and facilities are clean, safe and well maintained.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and implement activities to meet the physical, emotional, educational and social needs of the children in the program based on the Montessori method of development.
- Provide nutritious snacks and lunches.
- Provide adequate equipment and ensure equipment and facilities are clean, well maintained and safe at all times.
- Develop culturally appropriate programs and activities.
- Develop activities that introduce mathematics and literacy concepts.
- Establish policies and procedures including acceptable conduct.
- Ensure adequate capacity to respond to emergencies, including medical incidents.
SUPERVISION OF THE CHILDREN
- Ensure children are supervised at all times and provide a safe and secure environment.
- Provide extra curricular experiences and activities including songs, games and storytelling.
- Establish routines and provide positive guidance.
- Clearly and effectively communicate at an appropriate level for children.
- Observe and document the progress of all the children.
- Integrate special needs’ children in a positive and respectful manner.
- Plan holiday programmes for children on the reserve.
COMMUNICATE WITH PARENTS AND MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY
- Discuss children’s development with parents, keeping them informed of program expectations, activities and their child’s progress.
- Discuss identified problems and needs with professionals as appropriate.
- Provide a report to the Head of Human Resources on a quarterly basis.
SUPERVISION AND MANAGEMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT’S STAFF
- Outline clear role expectations for team members.
- Provide training and development for team members.
- Ensuring appropriate conduct and high performance.
- Conduct performance reviews when required by the company.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Tertiary qualification in Education (B. Ed)
- Montessori Accredited
- Valid driver’s licence
- Computer literacy
GENERAL
- Participate in the reserve community activities as a collaborative member of the team.
- Volunteer to serve on various committees that are required by the company.
- Weekend work and after-hours is required when necessary.
